Both of these quartets (D804 and D810) were composed in 1824 and evidence shows that Schubert was very aware of his poor state of health – which eventually brought about his demise just four years later – and a sense of reflection is apparent in both pieces. These works are now considered to be cornerstones of the quartet repertoire, and add to the impressive body of recordings built up by the Wihan Quartet. Their discs of Beethoven and Dvorak have all been enthusiastically received by critics all over the world.
