DDA21224 Cilia Petridou “Sounds of the Chionistra”

Greek-Cypriot pianist/composer Cilia Petridou was born in Cyprus in 1945. This two CD set contains some beautiful and highly accessible music.  CD1 is a collection of settings of Greek poetry. CD2 features a collection of pieces for a variety of combinations of chamber musicians, all inspired by the history and natural beauty of Cyprus – among them Mount Olympus – or Chionistra as it is known locally.

MSV28537 “Tapestry” – Chamber Music by Elliot Schwartz performed by the Kreutzer Quartet/Longbow Ensemble

Schwartz’s style is marked by a fondness for unsynchronized layers of activity (the musical equivalent of double exposure), highly dramatic – even theatrical – gestures, and brilliant instrumental colours. His juxtaposition of tonal passages and angular, modernist ones may create a sense of time warp, compounded by his penchant for quoting fragments of preexisting music.

Featuring two of our most adventurous contemporary music ensembles The Kreutzer Quartet and LongBow Ensemble – both led by Peter Sheppard Skærved

MSV28536 Michael Finnissy “Unknown Ground” performed by the New Music Players

The Métier label continues a very strong commitment to the music of Michael Finnissy with this latest new disc. “Unknown Ground” was written in 1989/90 and has received several performances since. “À propos de Nice” is a scoring for the 1930 Jean Vigo silent film of the same name. “Kritik der Urteilskratt” or ‘Critique of Judgment’ draws its inspiration from the work of Kant.

New Music Players was founded by Ed Hughes in 1990. The ensemble features some of the UK’s finest musicians, and draws inspiration from the range and versatility of their collective experience. Core players are also members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Manchester Camerata, the English Chamber Orchestra, Psappha, notes inégales and others extending to period instrument performance, jazz and improvisation.
